Concept of Essential Medicines
Essential medicines are those that satisfy the priority of health care needs of the population. They are selected with due regard to public health relevance, evidence on efficacy and safety, and comparative cost-effectiveness.This are medicines are intended to be available within the context of functioning health system in adequate amounts,in appropriate dosage forms,with assured quality and adequate information,all can afford the price of that,experience has shown that careful selection of limited range of medicines result in higher quality of care,better management of medicines that also include improved quality of prescribed medicines, and most cost-effective use of available health resources.
Medicines such list selected after careful study of medicines and comparison of value they provide in relation to their cost.The first WHO model list was drawn up in 1977 in response to request from world health assembly to selection to the director general of WHO to provide member state with advise on the selection an procurement, at reasonable cost,of essential medicines of established quantity corresponding to their national health needs.the model list has since been revised and updated at interval of approximately two years.it is heart of WHO revised drug strategy,also help in their medicine procurement and supply programm
